Despite the thundery weather and occasionally warm shower, Stone Fete was, as usual, a delightful afternoon and the Flower Show in the marquee well worth seeing. As always, there were some really irresistible-looking cookery entries.
Children's entries are always fun too - on being asked to 'make a named animal out of vegetables' there has been progress this year. Last year, unidentifiable monsters stalked the cloth-covered tables, all of them neatly named in wobbly writing - "Brian" or "Fred". This year, after some clarification in the schedule, each is an identifiable species. The labels this year read "Ryan the Rhinoceros", "Geraldine the Giraffe" etc. Children are very logical creatures.

Vegetable entries varied: there were no entries in the 'open' class for lettuces, no doubt due to the weather, and sweet peas had suffered from the overnight storm. Other classes were well represented however, and prizes were spread out among a large number of exhibitors. The entries in the "cottager's" classes (gardeners living in the parish) were especially impressive.
