Free woodchip

15/2/2015

There is still plenty of free woodchip for plotholders and Trading Store members at Westrees site. Bring your own bags - shovels are available to borrow at the Trading Store when it is open, or bring your own with you.

This woodchip is the product of tree surgeon's work and is mixed hardwood and conifer. It is ideal for paths but unsuitable for composting.

Woodchip can be collected whenever the Trading Store is open or when plotholders are present to allow you access.

Half price seeds at Hamstreet Garden Centre

9/7/2014

All seeds are now half price at Hamstreet Garden Centre - across their extensive range from several seed companies.

Other reasons to take the short drive out -
  • Large 10kg tubs of pelleted chicken manure (sometimes known as 'the organic Growmore) down from £14.99 to £4 - no, that's not a typo, four pounds - while stocks last.
  • 25% off all Spear and Jackson tools.
  • Perlite and vermiculite, essential for growing on young plants, also half price - both large bags and small
  • Burgon & Ball decorative-yet-useful "A day on the Allotment" tool and tuck box, as well as their sturdy metal seed storage tin, both half price.

There were a lot of other half price bargains on my visit but these were the ones that caught my eye.

Tempting offers at Hamstreet Garden Centre

14/3/2014

Your website compiler was down at Hamstreet Garden Centre yesterday and spotted the following that might appeal:

Until 18th March, Hamstreet has 'rootgrow' mycorrhizal fungi mix at half price, £2.99 from £5.99. This is just the stuff you need when planting fruit bushes, as it helps the plant develop a much stronger more effective root system.
Click here to go to the website which explains more.

Block paving isn't something the average allotment has, but after the wet years we've had you might be wanting to have a go at the moss at home. Yeoman are currently doing a deal where, if you buy a long-handled paving brush, you get a short-handled one free. the long-handled one is £9.99 and the short one is usually £4.99. Click here for the page in their catalogue.

Hamstreet Garden Centre is part of a group which runs a 'gardening club'. In effect this is a discount card. It's free to join and you get to take advantage of their special gardening club offers. Currently the 'Buy One Get One Free' on giant tubs of pelleted chicken manure is the one most likely to tempt you to join. Well worth it, as there are different offers throughout the year.

Seed Testers Sought

28/2/2014

Tuckers Seeds are looking for gardeners to help test their new seed varieties in the "real world", under a wide range of conditions. The varieties are shown in the letter from Tuckers below. If you'd like to help test, you'll be given free seeds, and at the end of the season you'll be asked to rate how they've performed.

We'd like to involve as many people as possible, though of course the amount of seed is finite. If you'd like to take part in this exciting new partnership, contact us as soon as possible at ashfordallotments@yahoo.co.uk

Use the scroll bar to read the whole document - there are 3 pages in total. Buttons at the bottom of the box will allow you to blow up the text to a larger, mare readable size.

Last minute planting?

20/1/2014

Have you just recently taken your plot on?
Missed the boat in the autumn?

HARRINGE PLANTS at Sellinge (behind Potten Farm Shop) have some neat cabbage plants which will, if well fed and planted a little deeper than usual, stand a very good chance of yielding you some spring cabbage. At 50p for a tray of six, it's worth a punt. Varieties are "Spring Hero" (round), "Durham Early" (pointed) and Curly Kale. They are in cell trays like bedding, so should transplant just fine. There is a good stock right now, but when they're gone, they're gone.

Harringe Plants have their onions sets, garlic and shallots in now, also seed potatoes by weight (as many different varieties as you like, you only pay for the total weight).
