SUMMER SHOW REPORT 2015
The 2015 Summer Show of Ashford Allotment Society was held in the hall at Kennington Junior School on July 18th. There was a good turnout although the late season meant there weren't as many exhibits as in 2014. However the new hall was ideal; light and airy with an outdoor space for teas which, with the sunny pleasant weather was a definite bonus. For the first time this year the larger venue made space for stalls. Greenman Solar, a local family firm from Kingsnorth who sponsored our posters this year, came along and talked to people about the in and outs of solar power. Claire Bate, an allotmenteer with a cottage business as a florist specialising in seasonal, home-grown wedding and occasion flowers, brought her floral displays, and Wood'n'Ware, who work with adults with learning dificulties teaching woodworking skills and making useful items, brought their bird houses and insect hotels which sold well. As well as the usual cakes and reviving tea, this year visitors were able to enjoy cream teas with strawberries as well. The afternoon was very jolly and social and everyone enjoyed themselves.
The preserves and baking entries were judged again this year by Jane Graham, while the fruit, vegetables flowers and hobbies were judged by Sandra Uden assisted by Plotholder Judge Barry Hayward from Bybrook.
Former Show Secretary Tony Fagg was pleased to win Best Potatoes, while Best Beans was won by Brian Stamp (who also has the best plot in the borough at Musgrove Farm).
Best vegetable ( onions ) and also Best fruit was won by G Summers, who swept the borad by also winning Best Preserve. Best Flower Arrangement was won by Debbie Angrave, and the Best Tray was won by Carol Ridings. The 'Novice Tray', for allotmenteers who have never exhibited before at the show, was won by Mr and Ms Sweetlove. The Children's Tray was once again won by Abbie Khadaroo, and Colin and Julie Gill proved last year's success was skill not luck by once again winning Best Bake. Best In Show this year was awarded to Mark Chandler, who won an ergonomic spade and fork from Wilkinsons with his exceptional tomatoes.
Many others were delighted to be winners or runners up in all the various categories . Certificates for the Best Plot Competition were also awarded, with (as mentioned) Brian Stamp bearing off the vintage cup for Best Plot to adorn his mantlepiece till next year.

Best Plot Competition Winners.
Gasp in amazement, fellow allotmenteers (well, I did), at Brian's winning plot. Clearly a very deserving winner, and an amazing gardener.
