Best ever fund-raising at the Hospice Fair

Chairwoman Penny and Show Secretary Tony manned the stall at the Hospice Fair on Saturday 2nd August, and turned your surplus fruit, vegetables and jam into much-needed funds for the Hospice.

Above:
If you don't grow courgettes yourself, then this is a sight to make the mouth water at this time of year!

Penny writes: "
We had a very successful day and raised £97.70, our best total yet. We had a wonderful selection of fruit, vegetables and flowers together with lovely homemade jams. Thanks to all who helped and donated in particular plotholders at Musgrove, Cryol Road, Henwood, William Road and Repton. The day was sunny and perfect for the fete with over 2000 visitors and (a couple of very large marrows aside) we only had a few courgettes over which were given to the kitchen. So very successful!"

Allotment photograph competition

Summer is coming and the allotments are starting to look really good. Up till now, the photographs on this website have mostly been taken by the compiler. And I have no hesitation in saying that most of them are rubbish! Photography is certainly not one of my talents.

Now, we're sure you can do better. On the left is the fabulous photo of Henwood taken by one of the plotholders last summer. Below is another stunner by the same photographer.
We want to see your very best photos. Send a mouthwatering pic of your site (it doesn't have to be your plot, mind!) to our email address, ashfordallotments@
yahoo.co.uk

As many of the photos as possible will be used on the website. Photos will be used to head up the page on each site, and other photos will be used as illustrations. The best photo of each site will be displayed at the Summer Show, and the best of all will get a modest prize. So get snapping!

SPARE PLANTS SWAP

SPARE PLANTS: BRING AND BUY

Bring your spare plants up to the Trading Store this Saturday May 3rd, to find them good homes and raise some money for the Summer Show. If you haven't got spare plants, come to the Trading Store and buy some! Who knows what you'll find, it'll all depend what turns up on the day. Some may be rarer ones you've never tried!

If you are bringing plants, please bring them before 11am if possible (the earlier the better in fact). All plants should be in clean compost and should be labelled - just the way you'd like to buy them. If you'd like any unsold plants back please call back just before the Trading Store closes.
You don't need to be a member of the bulk buying scheme to take part.

All the money raised will go towards Summer Show expenses. The Trading Store is, as I'm sure you all know, at Westrees allotments on Quantock Drive.

A reminder about rubbish

13/4/2014

Just a reminder to all plotholders that it is absolutely and entirely the responsibility of allotmenteers to remove their own rubbish. Though, in the past, the council sometimes generously provided a skip, this is – not surprisingly in the current financial climate – now completely out of the question.

Dumping your rubbish by the gate of your site is nothing more or less than flytipping. Other plotholders will be, justifiably, angry and disgusted. So please take everything either to the dump or, where suitable, home for the black bin.

I’m sure none of our plotholders are the sort of people who’d drive an unwanted sofa out to dump it among the bluebells in some pretty stretch of woodland, so help keep our allotments equally appealing by removing all unsightly rubbish in a sensible way.

A disgusting pile of rubbish at Musgrove Farm allotments. After the site rep Sue had bravely bagged up all the rubbish in strong bags, kind and helpful plotholders took it to the dump. No repeat performance though, please!

Volunteers please step forward!

Our busy and thriving Trading Store
is looking for some volunteers.

Would you like to meet fellow gardeners in a jolly setting? The Trading Store would very much like to welcome volunteers who could spare a couple of hours on a Saturday morning.

You would find yourself helping Trading Store members by weighing out plant foods, helping load cars with composts, and measuring out weed control fabric, netting and so on.

You would not need to come every time the seed shed is open. It would be nice to have volunteers who could come once a month through the summer, but any help will be welcome.

If you'd like to see what's involved and talk to the Trading Store crew, come down on one of the days the Trading Store is open. Things are busiest from 10-12am, so this would be the time volunteers would be most valuable.
