Allotment Bring and Buy 21st June at the Trading Store

1/6/2014

Ashford Allotment Society will be running a GARDENING BRING AND BUY at the Trading Store on 21st June, during the normal opening hours of 10am to 2pm. It’s like a jumble sale, but for all allotment-related stuff!!!

This is a splendid chance to find good homes for surplus tools, seed trays, cloches, mini-greenhouses,  small square propagating pots, really large pots, heaters, propagators, nice plants, gardening books, and so on. Spare plants will also be welcome. Come along, bring your surplus stuff and pick up a bargain!

Please bring your donations to the Trading Store either on May 31st or June 7th during normal opening hours, or on the day itself, as early as possible. ALL THE MONEY RAISED WILL GO TO EXPENSES FOR OUR SUPER SUMMER SHOW.

Please bring things people can use, which they will be prepared to pay small sums for. We know you've got more sense than to bring stuff which is only fit for the dump!

Bring your spare plants to the Trading Store on Saturday 17th May for our fund-raising plant swap. Buy plants you need and find good homes for your surpluses. All plants will be jolly cheap, and the money raised will go to improve the Summer Show.

Your plants should be in clean compost and clearly labelled, just as you'd like to buy them. Please bring plants as early as possible after 10 am. There will be all sorts, so come along and see what you can find!

compost tumbler made out of waterbutt
Spotted during the spring survey - this cunning compost tumbler fettled out of an old waterbutt. It turns on little wheels in a handmade timber cradle. How clever is that?

Send us your bright ideas, recycling extravaganzas and bursts of genius, for us all to share and marvel at.

Sorry folks, this has now gone.

Julie has a spare polytunnel frame. It just needs polythene. If you'd like it get in touch. I've asked her the size and will add that detail when I get it.

Where did my shed go?

This plotholder has now given up. What a shame.
A
plaintive cry:
"My shed got damaged beyond repair during the storm , the plot is on William Road , l'm on the look out for an shed that anybody does not want or wants to sell on that site. If you you have one, please post a reply and we can get contact details."

The editor has seen the ex-shed in question. It travelled a surprising distance and if the boundary fence had not checked it's progress might indeed be going still. The various sections  had completely parted company and are no longer what they once wuz. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the material, it is now beyond repair. If you can help "Shed-less of William Road" source a replacement shed, reply either by leaving a comment, or to [email protected], and we'll put you in touch.

If anyone would like bulbils of Rocambole to grow on, contact the website using the contact form, or email the compiler on [email protected]. This close cousin of garlic has been used in British cooking and grown in British gardens for centuries. It is more tolerant of heavy soils than other types.

Free to a good home

OK, we know it's not a vegetable! We have a small number of tubers of this gloriously exotic yet fairly easily grown plant from the Himalayas (click here to go to RHS page about it).
It will grow happily in a pot or in any sheltered spot in reasonably well-drained soil. You don't need to lift the tubers. Fantastic patio plant. Amaze and astound your friends! Have your neighbours green with envy! Contact Us if you'd like some!

TIP: cuttings you wouldn't expect to root in water.

You're usually told to root Rosemary by taking semi-ripe cuttings and putting them in gritty compost. In fact, it's far easier to break off some shoots and put them in a jam-jar of water, where they'll root really quickly - these on the left were making new roots after a few days. Thanks to PAM for this tip, which she discovered by accident when she was given some herbs and popped them in water.

After I'd tried rosemary, I thought about giving carnations a go. Often when you buy a bunch in the florist, there are little sideshoots near the base. These too root well in water - though the fragile young roots need careful handling. All these carnations were rooted in a jamjar of water on the windowsill!
